The Week in International Baseball (11-17 March)

The national team of Czech Republic gave a quick update as it travelled to Sicily for spring training (tweet).

Martin Mužík continued his torrid streak as we updated you on European players in the US (tweet). We also offered updates from Nolan Bond’s second start of the season (Part 1, Part 2).

Canada’s Scott Richmond signed to play in Italy for Nettuno. The right-hander saw action in parts of four major league seasons and has excelled in Taiwan recently (tweet).

Italy named its roster for the upcoming MLB Academies Tournament in Sant Boi, not to be confused with the Catalunya Baseball Week (more on that later), taking place March 22-28 (link). Our comprehensive 2018 calendar has been updated with the event (link).

The Opening Day viewing party in Leeds scored a £200 holiday voucher in advance of the event (tweet). Meanwhile, GB Head Coach Liam Carroll confirmed his attendance at the London Opening Day soirée (thread).

Chavez Young, a Bahamian member of the Great Britain national squad, was featured by the Canadian Baseball Network in a feature on the Jays’ prospect (link).

With absolutely no warning or fanfare, MLB announced that the minor league will feature a modified international tiebreaker in extra innings (tweet). Tyler Maun, a former minor league broadcaster, current writer for, and future guest of the site, wrote a must-read thread on the subject (thread).

Two South African players were signed by Sweden’s Sundbyberg Heat, one for the purpose of training for Under-23 team trials for the World Cup (link).

Cal Ripken, Jr. announced plans to travel to the Czech Republic to put on a series of clinics organised by the US Embassy (link).

On Thursday, we added a surprise to our feed with a visit to the Salem Red Sox, with a series of behind-the-scenes photos from Haley Field:

Bo Bichette was listed on the Jays’ roster for the second team as the Brazilian prospect continues to make waves (tweet).

Fight the New Drug, a brilliant non-profit, gave a talk at Royals’ spring training (tweet).

Brazil’s Bo Bichette made the starting lineup for the first time as the Blue Jays took on the Canadian Junior National Team (tweet).

This weekend saw action from the first Catalunya Baseball Week, with Under-12, Under-15, and Under-18 tournaments between top European national academies. The U12 division featured two teams from Catalunya, plus Prague and German academies. The next level up had a team from Catalunya, Bologna, and an All-Star selection. The U18 level is the largest, with teams from Sweden, Germany (2), France, and Catalunya. Results: (Day 1). In U12 action, the team from the Czech Republic took home the title (tweet).

The Week Ahead
Though no announcement has been made, it is likely that the Czech Republic will face Italy as the two clubs host spring training in Sicily.
The Pan-American Qualifier for the Women’s Baseball World Cup commences on Thursday.
