Britain Shuts Out Slovenia in Euros, 12-0

By Gabriel Fidler

ZÜRICH –With a dominant Ben Pearson on the mound, the British offence collected 10 hits and seven walks, needing only seven innings to defeat Slovenia. Pearson, at 21 years the youngest full-time pitcher for Britain, collected his first win of the B-Level European Championships with five strong innings.

The Lions, ranked fifth in Europe, put the game out-of-reach in the first frame, plating nine runs against a shaky Luka Pučnik. Zack Wiley led off with a walk and stole second, scoring on a Matt Roxburgh double. Roxburgh was caught stealing, but after another walk, Sam Wiley ripped another two-bagger to make it 2-0. Rosen followed with his own double and was joined on the basepaths by Maikel Azcuy, who had drawn a walk as well.

Ryan Trask singled up the middle to make it 4-0, before Pučnik hit the next two batters to score another run. With only one out and a five-run deficit, Slovenia’s skipper, Vojko Korosek, yanked his starter and inserted Jan Pučnik.

Pučnik’s first four pitches were balls, adding a sixth run to the scoreboard, and a sacrifice fly by Roxburgh gave Great Britain a 7-0 advantage. After the sixth walk of the inning was issued, Sam Wiley pushed across the final two runs of the frame on a two-run single up-the-middle, and Pearson retook the mound after the long delay.

Showing no effects from the layoff, Pearson built off a 1-2-3 first with two strikeouts in the second, and the game settled into a quicker rhythm until the fourth.

Sam Wiley walked and scored on a triple by Azcuy into the right field corner, coming around to score on a wild pitch. With one out, Britain loaded the bases on three consecutive singles, plating another run in the frame after Luke Foley was plunked by Pučnik.

Neither side would score again, and Head Coach Sam Dexter gave his bullpen some work, getting scoreless frames from David Rees and Andy Heggen in the mercy-rule shortened contest. Pearson earned the victory on account of five innings of four-hit, no-walk baseball. The righty whiffed six.

Luka Pučnik was charged with eight earned runs on four hits and three walks, retiring only one batter. After a shaky entrance, Jan Pučnik went 5 2/3 frames, giving up four runs on six hits and four walks. Neither pitcher struck out a batter.

Brett Rosen and Sam Wiley each had a single and a double, while six other players had a single safety. Zach Wiley and Mitch Evans each drew two walks, while Sam Wiley’s three RBIs led the team. Slovenia had only four hits and were held scoreless for the first time in the tournament. They did not commit an error in the field, while Britain was guilty of one.

Both clubs return to action on 25 July, with the British taking on 14th-ranked Ukraine, and No. 21 Slovenia contesting No. 19 Poland. Slovenia drops to 0-3, while the Lions have a perfect record through three contests.
